Achievements

Achievements have been added to SOLAR DESCENT!

An open achievement standard has been available on the Playdate for about a year now, but until recently there hasn't been a straightforward way to implement it in Pulp projects. Building on ideas similar to Panic's Pulp Game Switcher, Dimitri from the Playdate Squad Discord created Dimitri's Awesome Pulp Switcher, which includes an example project for adding achievements to Pulp games.

Version 1.1 of Dimitri's Awesome Pulp Switcher has an issue where music and sound effects temporarily speed up after closing the achievement viewer. Version 1.1.2 is intended to fix this problem, but in my experience it instead causes the timing of notes and sound effects to feel slightly off after exiting the achievement viewer.

Personally, I recommend sticking with version 1.1. It's a solid plug-and-play solution if you can tolerate the audio speeding up for a second or two whenever you close the achievement viewer. With a few lines of PulpScript, you can also smooth out the transition further by doing the following:

1. Keep track of which song is playing in a variable.
2. Stop the music right before opening the achievement viewer.
3. Open the achievement viewer by using PulpScript.
4. Immediately loop the music after exiting the achievement viewer.

The song will restart from the beginning, but it’s noticeably less jarring than having the music temporarily speed up.
